Found another heron with a snake. All the snakes I've seen them with around here are orange spotted garter snakes which are really pretty.3 points

Thank you! This was a new bird for me, and looks like a new bird for the county on eBird too! We had some strong thunderstorms/cold front come through last night so I’m guessing that had something to do with it.1 point

Between the shadow and the angle, I'm not sure we're getting a fair look at the throat or the bill size... I'm really not sure about this one.1 point

Best guess is this is a Rufous -- the next to central tail feathers appear to have a slight notch, and the outer tail feathers aren't all that narrow. But I wouldn't bet the farm on it.1 point

I'd call it a Western Wood-Pewee. It's too dark for a Willow, I think.1 point

I can't take credit for the id. I posted some photos in this forum, and darknight thought that it might be an Allen's, and contacted Ms. Sheri L. Williamson. Ms. Williamson then identified it as an Allen's in response to this photo: The current hummingbird is here for a third day, so I will attempt to get more photos.1 point

I've got a large Elderberry shrub out back and when those berries ripen in mid/late August it's like the last hurrah for summer here. Lots of Robins, Mockingbirds, Catbirds, and Orioles until they strip the shrub bare; then they're gone. Right now I have a big patch of ripening sunflowers and other perennials that attracts the goldfinches non-stop. Today there was a pretty orange-ish cardinal that I haven't noticed before. Some grosbeaks would be awesome but very unlikely - have seen them only once, a pair of Rose-breasted, in the spring, years ago.... She's got a cool hairdo too..1 point
