  2. This one looks like a Ring-necked with that bill pattern and the contrasting dark brown/light brown color on the back. Still not sure of the other duck.

  6. Just noticed the rufous-y patch in the wing of the sparrow. I think that confirms Vesper.

  7. The Phalarope is correct and I think the sparrow is a Vesper but it's pretty messy. The duck looks like a Ring-necked Duck due to the slight whitish ring around the bill, and it doesn't have strong white around the base of the bill like the Scaups. In addition it has an eye ring characteristic of Ring-necks.

  16. This looks like a Blue-gray to me. White belly (California have gray-brown bellies, and they're found west of the Coast Ranges), long bill (Black-tailed have shorter bills). Black-capped would be a major surprise anywhere in California, I believe, and you'd need a clean shot of the underside of the tail to support that ID.
