  7. It has to do with carotenoid pigments in the birds natural diet, typically produced by ornamental plants. Beta-carotene produces yellow and orange colors.

  10. Not 100 percent sure, but looks more like Forster's with the black eye patch and long tail. The carpal bar and dark primaries are confusing me, though.

  12. Male House Finches can range from red through orange to yellow. It depends on how much of a certain mineral they get in their diet, but I can never remember the name of it! The color variations don't have anything to do with the bird's overall health.

  14. I love this picture so much. The duck was hissing at the snowy egret for getting too close to his ducky lady friend.

  23. Rochester is my neck of the woods - tons of places to go along the lake in April. Braddock Bay can be incredible or dead, obviously depends on the winds. The adjacent owl woods can be pretty fun and it's a nice walk. Lots of public piers to check for shorebirds and waterfowl. If you're up for a 1.5-hour drive east, Montezuma NWR is the best place to be. There is also Iroquois NWR the other direction, about the same distance. It is also a really great spot but concentrates on hiking more than a driving tour. I can go on forever, feel free to PM me if you have questions about specific spots

  25. Ring billed. I want to say it’s a second cycle bird, but I may be wrong on the age. It’s definitely a ringer though.

  28. In case anybody hasn't seen this... https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/great-grey-owl-lands-on-camera-1.6397792 Have you ever had a bird land on your camera or taken a picture like that? By the way, I have long thought that Great Gray Owls look like Half Dome in Yosemite, and I'm not the only one. (Warning, if it's needed: that page contains profane language.) There are Great Gray Owls in Yosemite, and maybe someday someone will get a picture with both in one frame, if not in focus.
