  5. I ran into an Audubon tour group and the guide was showing Nelsons but of course they keep moving and hide in grass. They are easy to hear with such a unique sound. Sounds just like bigfoot stepping on a woodcock.

  6. Converting the time into seconds, dividing it by 1.5 to establish the number of intervals, and then multiplying the intervals by the number of birds gives me the same answers as yours.

  7. Cassin’s Vireo was my first impression. Though I’m not 100% on that.

  12. I hadn't taken a proper neighborhood survey in a while. A tad disappointed with the species count, but otherwise what one would expect here this time of year: https://ebird.org/checklist/S145744709

  13. That can definitely be it, I realized now that there is “Max total size” limit, it wasn’t there, but there was another update last week that I just ran, checked the site back, everything was working so I just moved on, but I can look at the settings and see if they have added any limitation, also I can’t leave it on unlimited/all files mode, for obvious reasons, but I can check it out soon.

  19. Russell Burgess Coastal Preserve, Horry County, northeastern coastal SC. 22 July 23. I was aiming for the Willet and didn't even see the photo lifer Whimbrel until I was checking the photos. This is only my second sighting of this species. When I was tagging the photo, I was surprised to see a 'Whimbrel' tag didn't already exist. I checked my library and Macaulay and sure enough, I had no photos of one.

  20. An early migrant Tricolored Blackbird...a surprisingly difficult species to get good photos of, in my experience. Also, with their noted decline, I always feel lucky to be looking at even one. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/597471731

  25. I think the cardinal has a longer tail. I looked up Orchard Oriole. That is possibly what I saw. The local habitat is similar to what was described. The lighting was shaded by three live oak trees.

  27. I wouldn’t say that CAVI is necessarily rare in that area. Maybe it’s been unreported at that very specific spot, but it’s all over the surrounding area. I don’t really see this bird as anything else. What else do you think it could be?

  28. I sort of did that. I took counts from a number of different frames and averaged them. I also attempted to count the old school “one-one thousand, two-one thousand,” etc. I recently revisited the video and figured that most birds cross the screen in ~1.5 seconds, like Charlie figured. So, 60 birds per 1.5 seconds puts my estimate at 72,000 for the 30 minute observation. If my math serves me correct, 45 birds every 1.5 seconds in a 1:03 minute video equates to 1,890 birds. Over the span of the 30 minutes observation, that would yield approximately 54,000 birds. Please check my math ya’ll.

  29. Two checklists today: https://ebird.org/checklist/S145706758 - Good number of species for the time of day and distance travelled. https://ebird.org/checklist/S145703103 - Decent checklist for the time of day and ground covered.

  30. Scarborough is the only place on earth where both Nelson’s and Saltmarsh breed. Most of your birds look more like Saltmarsh, but I’m not certain about all of them.

  38. I would not say that I got a good look at the beak. It was short enough to be consistent with that of a sparrow. I was on my second floor deck and looking down on the bird feeder. I had a good view of the back and belly and side of the bird but it was a view of about thirty seconds because I ran for the camera.

  41. I STILL need them! Hopefully I’ll be able to pick them up this fall/winter. Not an easy bird in the SoCal area, there’s a few reliable sites in riverside county though. Along the coast and especially in OC, they’re quite rare.
