One from back home. It took a while for me to figure out what species it was, at first in the field I thought it was an ordinary buzzard. However, several apps and algorithms had problems with identifying this bird. Eventually someone noted the shape of the nostril; which is apparently distinct for the European Honey-buzzard. Even though this is "just" a joung bird, I am still happy with my first sighting of this species! 🙂 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/6089279895 points

Well, it's September but this weekend I passed last year's total. However, this year's number includes a 30-species trip to the UK back in May. For the US alone, I'm still 27 behind last year. I have a big weekend coming up at the end of the month, so hopefully I can improve the 'real' year-over-year number.5 points

I followed one of the local top birders to find this American Golden-Plover: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/6089060324 points

I looks good for a Yellowlegs, but not sure which. Maybe leaning Greater. Solitary would have slightly shorter legs, and is usually darker mocha brown on the back4 points

@Kevin, @aveschapinas, looks like we're scanning for it in the body of the message but not in the title? EDIT - yeah, that's how it's being done. They play games with the spelling inside the body of the post, but we're not checking the post titles. I was able to create a test post with the character string in the title in the 'iBird Apps' forum.3 points

Ah, I think I see. The text string displayed doesn't match what's shown if you hover over it. Hovering over reveals 'Uni versity'. Seriously, does this crap work well enough to pay for the power used to send it? A series of random third-world schools, all lumped into the same blast? Are there that many people with Internet access stupid enough to fall for this? I swear, Internet use should require a qualification test and a license.3 points

I went here first, looking for an American Golden-Plover lifer, as somebody reported it had been hanging around with the Black-bellied Plovers, but by the time I got there, it had left. An otherwise OK checklist for the time spent and distance travelled: https://ebird.org/checklist/S150066440 Then, I drove down the road a little bit and got my American Golden-Plover lifer. Good checklist otherwise. Had the storm not come, I would hung around longer, travelled farther, and gotten some additional species: https://ebird.org/checklist/S1500613453 points

Looks fine for Greater Yellowlegs, and Solitary lacks the white spotting on the wings.3 points

I'm pretty sure that is a Greater Yellowlegs. The angle it's facing seems to be making the beak appear shorter than it actually is. Edit: This is the second picture attached to the checklist: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/6089172962 points

Least Sandpiper would be my best guess. Dunlin would have a noticeably longer bill.2 points

Today a white-breasted nuthatch from the trip; love the lichen on the tree branch https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/6088816392 points

I thought you meant that Solitary Sandpipers could be nearly the same size as Greater Yellowlegs, which they definitely don’t. Even that Lesser Yellowlegs is noticeably bigger than the Solitary Sandpiper.1 point

Checked an irrigation pond that hadn't been eBirded in a few weeks. Every time I've gone here, something cool has shown up! First time was 1st county record BBWD, second was rare AMAV and STSA, and today was a trio of BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS (my fav!) along with a bunch of other cool stuff. They ran right up to us, within 10 feet! Can't wait to see the photos the other birder I was with got, he has a much better camera! https://ebird.org/checklist/S1500375501 point
