  4. After months of sketching, drawing, and painting, my first ever calendar is finally finished! The originals are all done in watercolor. I intentionally chose some species that are perhaps not the first that come to mind when one thinks of New England. I painted each of the species in the habitat and season I associate them with. Thanks to everyone who posted encouraging comments. @GracesWarbler @MichaelLong

  5. It's been too long since I've been able to login but I finally made it back! This is one of my favorites overall, and certainly my favorite Barn Swallow shot.

  6. I don't even know which one to pick. I had an amazing time with 10 Short-eared Owls, and this one flew right at and over me.

  10. Today is (theoretically) the last day of my semi-professional career. One of my co-workers called me about a computer problem. When I got to his desk, instead of the problem, he gave me this. It measures about 2.5-feet square.

  18. We hardly ever have Short-eared Owls around here. I've seen them for exactly 3 seconds in total ever, and with no pics. Had 10 and couldn't have asked for better looks.

  23. Based on the name, you would think Lime Warblers are found mostly in lime trees, but they're not. The one first seen by Audubon in a Key West lime tree was a vagrant. They're actually almost exclusive to orange groves further north, with a distinct subspecies that habituates lemons. The research for my doctorate should support renaming it as Citrus Warbler (Tropicanus Minutemaidi)

  29. Got word of this bird when I was out of town for Thanksgiving. I prayed to the bird gods for it to stay put and survive for the next three days until I was back in town. I went down this morning before class and spotted him just after sunrise! Such a cute little guy! And boy did he put on a show! Diving for food within 10 feet of us in clear water mere feet from the shoreline, allowing us to see them hunt underwater! Lifer #393!!!
