  1. This was take at Choke Canyon Lake State Park here in Texas which is about an hour south of San Antonio on 11 March. I know it isn't the best of pics to try to go off of, but the reason I suspect Osprey is because it was flying around over the deeper water of the lake. I was only able to get one shot of him before he passed too far out of range.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Thanks,

    Mark

  2. 29 Feb, Mitchel Lake Audubon Center, San Antonio, TX. Mitchell lake has several large ponds and the larger Mitchel Lake. These birds were on the lake in an inlet area that is kind of marshy. I think they were Green Winged Teals, based upon what I can tell and info from another birder I spoke to earlier who said they were on this area of the lake. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

  3. I took a series of pictures at one spot at Mitchel Lake Audubon Center here in San Antonio, TX on Saturday 29 Feb. There were a ton of Northern Shovelers that day, but many here I don't recognize. I am not up to speed really well on water fowl. I also recognized in the pictures the Black Necked Stilts. I think the one picture also has an American Avocet, and there were some green winged teals in another area (at least I think that is what they are :). Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

  4. Thoroughly confused on this one. Early morning on 29 Feb at Mitchel Lake Audubon Center here in San Antonio, TX. I have not seen a mostly white hawk before. I had thought maybe it was a Red Tail, but as I zoomed in the picture, I think (not 100% sure) that what I am seeing is not the breast, but rather the back side of the hawk and it is looking back over its shoulder. I could be wrong about that, but the picture is confusing. I am still leaning towards Red Tail and the darker area across the white being the belly band, but just want some other opinions please.

    Thanks,

    Mark

  5. Thanks all and thanks Charlie for the welcome back. I did get some better pics today of this bird in flight. He was still hanging around the same area, exhibiting the same behavior of moving from tree stand to tree stand. At times, yes his tail did appear red, with a band on the tips. But, in a different angle, the undertail is white along with the wing feathers. So, I can see Red-tail Dark Morph (Harlan's) (thanks Akandula) according to the reference pic in Merlin. What do you all think of that analysis? Good call?

  6. I know I have been absent for a while here, but work and life. I however do need some assistance on identifying this hawk. I think it may be a Harris Hawk. This was seen on 2 Jan around Lackland AFB here in San Antonio, TX around noon. I apologize for the not so great pics, but the little bugger wouldn't let me get within range for a really good pic. He kept moving from tree stand to tree stand along the road that bordered a large scrub field. I am going to go back to the area today to see if he is still in the area and attempt to get better pics. Plus, it was an overcast day, so not the best for photography.

  7. These shots were taken on 6/29/2019 - mid-afternoon from my front porch here in San Antonio. It was a small hawk and based upon reference pics from Merlin, I believe this to be a broad-wing. I looked at the wing shape, the dark tips on the secondaries, the lighter patagial (I was looking for the darker shade for red shouldered), and the tail banding.

  8. I know these guys white wing doves, but I hadn't seen this behavior until about a week ago when we had three of them down in the yard doing this. I just happened to come out with my camera when I noticed these same two doing the same thing on the tree. Reminds me of a broken wing type of behavior, but I hadn't seen this in doves around here in San Antonio,
