I haven't had a chance to post in a while as I've been working 6-7 days a week for the last 2-3 months. UGH. None of the birds from the first brood survived. A red-tail hawk got one, and a neighbors cat got the other two. I was crushed. Second brood of three were good. Third brood they moved to my neighbors box on his property and they had four. We have a sizable blue bird population! As a side-note, my neighbor (with the cats that are constantly in my yard) had an argument last weekend. We've several conversations and text messages about their cats and he has stated repeatedly he would take care of the issue. I was looking out the back window on one of my few days off and one of the cats attacked and got a Northern Flicker at the bird bath. I ran outside and cased it away and it released the bird. I walked directly across the street and argued about the cats and how was tired of cleaning up after dead birds, rabbits and cleaning their mess. Long-story short we disagreed over the situation. We were able to talk it over later in the day and he assured me they would take care of the situation but yet, everyday they have been in our yard. I ended up taking one of the bird baths down so it doesn't attack any other birds. Does anyone else have similar issues?

I checked and there is a new nest in the box. Male was feeding the young most of the day today and feeding the female. Should have a second brood soon.

The look in his eyes says it all. This was taken about 5 seconds before he attacked me.

I got extremely lucky over the weekend and saw one too eating suet. I had a double take and never saw one before.

I put a mini bluebird trail in my backyard that runs along a biking/walking trail behind our property. I put the first house up three years ago and finished with a third bluebird house last year. This year was the first time the bluebirds FINALLY took to one of the boxes. The young ones fledged on May 15. Here is a picture of the proud papa getting meal worms for his little ones. In addition this particular feeder has been the most effective feeder for the Eastern Bluebirds. I took an old wire suet feeder and lined the inside of the walls so the larger birds could not force their way in from the side of the roof. It took the Eastern Bluebirds sometime to actually try to use the feeder but they eventually came around to use it this winter. It has saved me much money in meal worms because the Starlings, Blue Jays and House Sparrows would devour them before the Bluebirds could get to them.

My neighbor a few houses down gets bluebirds in his bluebird house every year. Even though I have a bluebird house, put out mealworms and have bird baths they never take to mine. I was talking my neighbor two weeks ago and he told me he had 5 babies in the house but after a couple of days they were all dead and the bluebirds were no where around. They tried going in my birdhouse but the sparrows kept kicking them out so they ended up going to another neighbors bird house. The are very close to our backyard and are around the majority of the day. I checked the box and there are some eggs! The funniest thing is my neighbor put that box up 15 years ago and NOT one bird as ever lived in it.

I'm new here and wanted to share my bird experiences from the last few weeks. Two weeks ago on a Saturday evening I put the hummingbird and oriole feeders. I cut several oranges in half and put them out with grape jelly. The next morning I woke up to the sound of a male Baltimore Oriole at the feeder. Not long after some females arrived. After about three days I stopped counting the number orioles I had in our backyard. They eat up the grape jelly and oranges in a few days and so I make sure to keep the feeders full. The last week I noticed purple finches and gray catbirds going to the oriole feeder as well. The funniest thing I noticed are the orioles avoid the orange skins at all cost and eat around them. I hope to post some better images soon but they absolutely love this feeder.

I live near Kalamazoo, Michigan and for the few years I've gotten Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks at my feeders and they usually stay around for a week. A male and two females were around for may be two weeks and I haven't seen them at the feeders since last week.
