A large flock of birds kept up a constant banter around our ship throughout the night last night. It was way too dark and they weren’t close enough to see clearly, but they appeared to be white-ish. I recorded them (Dropbox link attached) in the hope that someone could ID 2023-04-10 2312.wav . Merlin identifies them as Royal Terns. Sure enough, I see there is a year-round population along the California coast south of Los Angeles where we are. Please have a listen and let me know if you concur. Thanks! 2023-04-10 2312.wav https://www.dropbox.com/s/3dte0njqzue7y9j/Night birds.m4a?dl=0

Small sandpiper-like bird

Funny, it ran just fine when I first uploaded, but now it has to be coaxed to run on my iPhone and won't run at all on my lap top. -

This video was shot today in the SF Bay Area. I haven’t seen this bird all summer, but have spotted it at least three times in the last couple of weeks. It’s quite small, but bigger than a Least or Western Sandpiper. Thanks! https://forums.whatbird.com/index.php?/forum/2-help-me-identify-a-north-american-bird/&do=add# 66B9ED9E-B080-435F-85B9-DDF02AA4F465.MOV

Many, many thanks to all for your comments and insights!

I pulled this off my NextDoor feed, shot recently in the SF Bay Area. So far, this bird has been identified as a brown eagle (yes, you read that right ), adolescent golden eagle, Swainson’s hawk, juvenile female red-tailed hawk, peregrine falcon and Cooper’s hawk. The person who appears to be most knowledgeable is saying juvenile female red-tailed hawk. Your thoughts, please.

Thank you so much! That's great. It buzzed my sister-in-law a foot above her head in its hurry to escape some belligerent Bluejays. Mark -

Sorry for the poor quality photos. Best I could do with an iPhone. Saw this bird today by SF Bay. It’s smaller than a Willet and bigger than a Western. Maybe (small) plover sized? Thanks!

Sharp-shinned or Cooper’s?

Thank you both! ? -
This bird was feasting in my brother’s Ottawa backyard last winter. I’m pretty sure it’s one those two hawks, but not sure which. Thanks for your help! Mark

Very interesting, thank you. Bud worms are sad for the spruce, but great for birds.

Is that because they are more abundant this year? (I should have said that the photos were taken today in the SF Bay area.)

Oh wow, that's a lifer! Or, at least, it's the first time that I know it's a Pine Siskin. ? Many thanks! Mark

Hi all, Could I get your opinion on whether these are Yellow-rumped Warbler? One is fighting off a Lesser Goldfinch. Thanks, Mark
