  2. I think it's going to be a tough week for J's. Buteo jamaicensis
  3. The Red-bellied Woodpeckers have provided me lots of entertainment, and opportunities to practice my tracking skills as they fly back and forth to and from the feeders. During this one sequence of shots the Red-bellied flew low in front of all the equipment you see that the camera could have focused on, but the eye detect focus stayed locked on the bird throughout the entire sequence. It's not really a photo worth sharing, but at the same time it's one of those photos that shows the potential of the eye detection tracking of the R6, and I thought that was worth sharing. Straight out of the camera full sized jpg. The above photo would have been very frustrating if I hadn't captured these images in the two previous frame.

  5. FWIW, I didn't think it needed clarifying. If the guy on the other side of the mirror is being straight with you, he'll tell you if you need to worry about your reputation in the eyes of other birders, or in any other aspect of life.
  6. I can't help but wonder if gravity stole the jelly away before the Oriole could enjoy it..

  9. I'm finding that the smaller the bird is, the harder it is to get in-flight shots. I like a challenge though so I'll keep trying until I get it right.
  10. The very photogenic Red-bellied Woodpeckers have been very cooperative lately. Not quite bending over backwards for me, but getting close to that.
  11. I have only had the Merlin App for a month or so and have only really tested it against the birds I am 100% sure about, in other words, I have been watching the singing bird while Merlin is analyzing the song. So far Merlin has been mostly accurate with the occasional west coast bird being suggested when the app fails to find my location. What I like about the sound ID in Merlin is it has suggested IDs to sounds I didn't hear, causing me to look for birds I wasn't anticipating. I'm not going to rely on its accuracy, but I will take advantage of its suggestions of what to look for that I might otherwise miss out on.

  13. I was just going through my menu settings, @chipperatl, and the Screen/viewfinder display setting is in the tools menu on the R6. I have 4 options in my menu, Auto1, Auto2, Screen, and Viewfinder. Hopefully you have the extra options that I think I read about.
  14. Have you gotten a flashing icon from your burst mode setting showing in your viewfinder, @chipperatl? Don't panic if you do. I'm not sure it applies to the R5 but the R6's burst mode icon starts flashes constantly when the battery drops below 60%, or when using a lesser battery like the 7Dii's battery. I had to do some research to discover that it simply indicates that the camera might not achieve maximum frames per second due to the battery performance. I appreciate the warning that my shutter speed might drop as the battery power drops, but that could have been done with a subtle color change of the icon and not the constant flashing that I get. Another annoyance that goes on my hate list.
  15. Not feeling too creative this morning so here's an older photo. Indigo Bunting
  16. Use the Info button to display the histogram while viewing a photo and it will then show up in the viewfinder during the camera's quick preview after you release the shutter button. Highlight Alert blinkies for over exposure can be enabled in the Playback menu, tab 5 on the R6 if that helps any for the R5.
  17. I read something somewhere about the R5 being able to turn the LCD screen off except for menus and playback, making it perform the same way as the 7D's LCD screen, a Firmware feature that the R6 is lacking. I think the setting might be found in your playback menu but I'm not sure. Since I don't have that option, one which i hate not having, I have chosen to turn the LCD screen off by disabling it entirely. I only flip the screen open for close scrutiny of photos, I use the viewfinder for quickly checking the histogram and focus. Hopefully you can take full advantage of your LCD screen without the annoyances that I have with mine.

  20. Instead of posting Indigo Bunting photos all week (which is the only I bird I have photos of), I decided to start the week off with something a little more creative. Interesting Interaction
