I have too many photos of Northern Cardinals to pick one as my best or favorite, so I picked my best photo from yesterday. -

ABCs of Birds...Weekly/Daily
lonestranger replied to lonestranger's topic in Photo Sharing and Discussion
A recent Hairy Woodpecker. -
I've been disappointed with a lot of my photos due to the background I am stuck with while sitting out on the back porch. Since I sit in the same spot everyday, and the birds typically follow the same routine, I end up with a few decent photos of birds that are ruined by the ugly background. I decided to change the background of a few recent photos with a blurred photo of the tree that would be in the background if my ugly storage container wasn't in the way. Before After

Welcome to this side of the forums, @rita. And thanks for your work on the other side. π -
Just a word of caution, @Snake Fingers, posting your home address online can expose you to potential problems. Using a generalization or description of the area is a lot safer than using your actual address. Shady characters are always looking to take advantage of someone's personal information when given the opportunity. Don't make it easy for them. π

What if your wife didn't end up in Alaska with you? Would she still be disappointed that you were accidently sent way up north? π -

Camera lens suggestions
lonestranger replied to MichaelLong's topic in Birding Books, CDs, Courses, and Cool Products
Be sure to check your camera's compatibility with the teleconverter and lens, some cameras are limited to center point focus with a TC attached to certain lenses, I think. -

I'm not really sure what kind of suggestions you're looking for. I used Aperture Priority before going to manual mode. I used a tripod whenever possible because we're not as steady handholding a camera as we like to think we are. I believe I started using back button focus on the 7D, which was a game changer for me at the time. I'm not sure what else to suggest other than practice, practice, practice. -

Have you considered renting a lens for a test trial? Perhaps a 'try before you buy' rental might help you decide if one lens or the other is better suited to your needs. If you rent one lens and love it, there's no need for a second rental. If you aren't sure after the first rental, it might cost a bit extra to rent a second lens but you'll know that you're getting the lens that you like best, not the lens that other people like. -

I apologize, I was using a 2x converter with the 400 f/5.6 on the 7D, not the 1.4x. I did get it right about using the 1.4x III converter with the 100-400 II on the 7D II. While the 2x converter worked on the prime lens, it didnt see as much use as the 1.4x converter did. Images provided are just the quickest ones I could find with exif information still attached. Clicking the image will take you to my old Flickr site with the camera/lens/settings info. -

Camera lens suggestions

I regularly used the 1.4 converter with both lenses on a 7D and 7D II and was happy with the results. -

I'll agree with both the Canon 400mm f/5.6 and the 100-400 II suggestions. Having owned both over the years, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either of them again. Having gone mirrorless, that's not likely to happen though. -

Welcome to Whatbird, @Birdz1. Your very well described bird sounds like an American Redstart to me, too.

I solved it by letter elimination and assistance from a list that just happens to include birds that have been extinct for nearly 200 years. π€¬ Oh yeah, I guess I should have announced, Spoiler Alert. My apologies if I spoiled the game more than the game has been spoiling the game.
