  3. My mistake, clicking on the little thumbnail shows the full image on iCloud. Still no benefit in using iCloud when the embedded ebird image takes you to the full resolution image anyways.
  4. I'm not sure that sharing your photos from iCloud has any benefit, @IKLland. I can only see part of the photo on iCloud unless I download it, it does not show me the full resolution image when clicked on. Clicking on your embedded photo from Cornell on the other hand, enlarges it here in Whatbird and a second click takes me to the full resolution image on Cornell's website, where I can enlarge it even further without the need for downloading it.
  5. Welcome to Whatbird @ME Birder. If spring comes early and the plants and insects emerge early, I think it's safe to expect the birds that feed on those plants and insects to show up early. Many migrants follow the food supply, not the calendar, so migration may happen sooner during an early spring. Just speculation on my part, I don't monitor migration but it makes sense to me that migration could be influenced by the weather.

  8. Now that's funny, not haha funny, but weird kind of funny because I had never heard of the second definition until you posted it. πŸ€ͺ
  9. South American birds are not likely to cause confusion in any conversations I have about Cardinals in Ontario. πŸ˜‰
  10. I got a follow-up email explaining that B85(Blue) was injured as a juvenile and banded just before being released after rehab.

  12. I use shortened names most of the time in conversation, especially when there's no chance of confusion. Cardinal doesn't need North in front of it for ID purposes. Chickadees are limited to Black-capped species here so there's no chance of confusion there. Crows and Robin's are just that, Crows and Robins without the American in front. The list goes on to include Juncos, Cowbirds, Starlings, Bluebirds, etc, etc, if there's no chance of confusion I keep the names as simple as possible.

  14. You can see a leaf at the base of its neck in the photo where it's neck is stretched out. I have no idea what the collar looking thing is, but there's a leaf on the left side of it.
  15. Yeah, something like that. I was thinking more of a plant like duckweed or something similar. It's some layer of something or other on the water surface.
  16. I suspect that that bird is popping up in the middle of some type of aquatic plant that looks very earth like.
  17. As @Kevin pointed out, the heaviest spammers use univer-sity and col-lege names in their spam so the programmers may have added a filter that is triggered when you use those words in certain combinations. Just speculating of course. Testing... Texas Univer-sity Univer-sity of Texas Texas Col-lege Col-lege of Texas Testing confirms that it's not just on @TexasCobra's end. I get flagged for those words and have added a - to all highlighted words so I can post. Unfortunately, your content contains terms that we do not allow. Please edit your content to remove the highlighted words below.
  18. I agree with @gpoole. If the nictating membrane is being backlit by the light that is hitting the eye, that would explain the variance in transparency. The only other plausible idea I can come up with is the bird having the ability to control the thickness of the membrane, perhaps stretching it into thicker/thinner segments at different stages as it closes. That's my creative mind at work trying to stretch things to fit the 'plausible' category though. I like the plausibility of the backlit idea better.
  19. I have a silly question about your game, @Jagularr. When we share our results, there is a bird icon before the game number. Sometimes it's a duck, eagle, owl, swan, etc, etc. Is there a method or pattern used to determine which bird is assigned to the game results or is it strictly a random thing? It doesn't look like it's score related to individual games, which makes me think it's random, or do our previous scores influence which bird we get? Any significance at all with the assigned bird icon or is it just a random (for lack of a better word) decoration?

  23. I saw my first Common Grackle a few days ago and two Red-winged Blackbirds a few minutes ago.
  24. Try game #4 if you want a good chance of acing one. I didn't start until game 9 when the game was first posted so the first few games are new to me, and should be new to most everyone else too.
