  1. Thank you everyone for the conversation about our odd looking chickadee. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but my husband and I only began birding about a year ago. If indeed this is rare variation in a black-capped chickadee, is there somewhere that we should report it? Orchard
  2. We have noticed a Black-capped chickadee in our yard but instead of the normal black cap, he has a brown cap. We found an article that talks about a variation in Black-capped chickadees but we would love to get your opinions. https://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/brown-headed chickadee.htm We live in Council Bluffs, IA. We first noticed him in June. He visits our feeders multiple times daily. He acts and sounds like the other black-capped chickadees.
  3. We were leaving Rowe Sanctuary in Kearney, NE at 10:30 AM on March 19, 2021. We saw this beauty fly across the road and land on this phone pole. It stayed there for about 3 minutes before flying off. We felt it looked smaller than the Red Tailed Hawks we had seen. What do you think?
  4. The pictures are blurry so we are having trouble determining what kind of bird we are seeing. there were 4 or 5 Canada Geese swimming in the middle of Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Saturday, December 5th. These geese were on their own away from the 1,000 other geese that were on the shore of the lake. The pictures show that there is a smaller goose swimming with these Canada Geese. Any ideas what kind of goose it is?
  5. We saw two of these Wigeon’s swimming with some Mallards and Canadian Geese at Big Lake in Council Bluffs, IA today. I know it is most likely an American Wigeon but it looks more like a Eurasian Wigeon to me. What do you think?
  6. e-bird photo ID shows up with both Henslow’s and Lincoln’s Sparrow. My husband and I are having a difficult time deciding which one it really is. We were at Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa. Photos were taken yesterday, around 3:30pm near a small pond with lots of other sparrow species around. Let us know what you think.
  7. Saw this little guy in a tree at my house in Council Bluffs, IA. He hopped around from branch to branch eating bugs for about 10 minutes but was always on the far side of the tree. I didn’t hear any calls and have never seen this bird at my house before. I think it might be a Nashville Warbler, Orange Crowned Warbler, or maybe some type of Vireo. What stands out to me is the white ring around his eye. Any ideas?
  8. There was one lone Sandpiper amongst seven Killdeer today at Big Lake in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We saw this little guy when we were watching the migrating Pelicans. Can you help us with a positive ID?
  9. Thank you. That is what we thought but the olive color was tricking us.
  10. We think it is some type of Warbler or could it be an Oriole? We think it was to big to be an Oriole. There were three hopping around in the tree eating insects. They were fast movers but we didn’t hear them make any sounds. Taken at Big Lake in Council Bluffs, IA on August 30th.
  11. We think it is either the Eastern Wood Pewee or the Least Flycatcher, but can’t tell for sure. We took this picture on August 30 at Vincent Bluff State Preserve in Council Bluffs, IA. We did not hear it make any calls.
