  1. Thank you both so much. The back was a warm solid milk-chocolate brown, fading to black-brown at the lower half of the wings. So it doesn’t exactly match any of the three birds you have suggested — which only goes to show, I suppose, the range of variations even within well-recognized species. Unhappily, the janitor removed it right after I took those two quick photos, so I couldn’t take any further looks.
  2. Today, in Baltimore, Maryland, I photographed this bird. I’ve had no luck identifying it with either iBird’s search or the photo sleuth, so I’m hoping others can help. The ivy leaf next to it will give you an idea of size. The back was a warm, solid brown; throat slightly spotted yellow; and chest/belly white.
