  1. I saw a crow with the white back of the neck this afternoon, immediately after reading this thread, but couldn't respond until now.

  3. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the shadows as colour, but this looks to me like a female goldfinch, especially with the bill looking conical in the first photo. Could all be photo artefacts of course.

  12. Ah thank you that makes more sense. I had no idea they were whitish as youngsters.
  13. Hi, here are some distant grainy shots of a bird that I'm presuming to be a marbled murrelet, as I can't figure out what else it could be. I have no experience with the genus, but this is the expected species (I think ancient is also possible but that doesn't seem to fit). Today on salt spring island, in the Southern Gulf Islands between Vancouver and southern Vancouver island. Thanks!
  14. Watched this goober hopping along, not quite able to straddle the rail
  15. And that's rotated? Hmm. Depending on your browser maybe try the Show Desktop Site option?

  17. For a bit of off topic comic relief, I did this with a large group of folks in a place we really should have known better. My now-wife and I spent a couple of years in Chile teaching (her teaching first graders and being a productive member of society, me teaching businessmen and being much less so). Shortly after moving to the north of the country we took a big teacher trip to San Pedro de Atacama, in the middle of the desert. Someone thought it would be a great idea to all rent bicycles and sandboards and bike out to some dunes to go sandboarding. Only a few of us were cyclists, so it was a bit sketchy to begin with, but we barely brought any water, just a few litres of water for like 20 people, for a good half day trip. To a place called Valle de la Muerte. Everything was fine in the end because my wife and I raced back into town, fetched colleagues with the trucks, bought a boatload of water, and raced back to escort people back to the highway for pickup. Anyway, here's a photo of some not very well hydrated cyclists in the valley, and to vaguely keep it on topic some flamingos from the salt flats in the area.
  18. Great photo, really curious how everybody does with this one birdie 🦆 #448: 🟥🟥🟥🟩⬛⬛ https://birdiegame.net/
  19. It came up in a photo quiz so I took a closer look. With all that brown, especially in front of the wing, I was wondering if it could have been one of those hybrids.

  21. Hi, and welcome to whatbird! This is a Mourning Dove. Not important here, but just a note that often date and location are needed to cement an ID.
  22. Hi, I'm curious your thoughts on this bird. Awful lot of brown for an Anna's. Not my photo. Thanks https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/516020501
  23. I don't think it's barn swallow or goldfinch. This was repeated intermittently for at least 10 minutes, with no other sounds of similar pitch or timbre being distinctive enough to hear. Might just have to chalk this up as a mystery, unless they're still there this morning when I drop my kid off for her daycamp.
