OK, back home. This photo is from a few years back when we had an unusual cold snap here (Sacramento) and the sugar water froze in the feeder. This is a Mama Anna's as she came to feed that morning....

Ooh! Oh wow, this is cold. Americans, they put ice cubes in everything! Should've wintered in Mexico.

In California it’s all online except for the test (at least when I did it a few years ago).

I think you can take some of it online in NY state, like the homework you have to do before the course, but I chose to do the homework on paper because I think it's just more strain on my eyes.

Ummm... yes you can. In some cases this is true, particularly when it comes to the Glaucous-winged complex but I don't really understand this sentiment in this context. Why would this not be a Cal Gull?

The entire idea of a 'species' is an entirely human construct, not some objective thing in nature. Of course every individual of a species might have some historical hybridization, just like humans historically hybridized with neanderthals hence we all have varying levels of neanderthal dna, but I don't think anyone would argue that we are not actually humans.

Yeah, I totally agree. It's just that I tend to use more tentative terms when commenting. I'm not here to pick a fight. In this case they are clearly California Gulls.

    Almost certain? Why almost certain?

You can never be 100 percent sure what a gull is. This gull may have some faint hybrid strains or some abbarency in the plumage that might make it more difficult to identify. I am not saying this to cover up my wrong answer, but I often use tentative terms when commenting for these reasons. Because of this, I often get questions. This is 99.99 percent what others have said above, but there is always variability.
