    I wouldn't exactly say perfect match. I've never seen a Blue-winged Teal with even a hint of orange on the bill, and it structurally seems wrong. At least not a pure BWTE, although it crossed my mind before.

    Correct, I don't think it's a black duck x mallard hybrid, although I think it has hybridization with domestic type mallards somewhere along the line.

    It's true Merlin is wrong some of the time, and isn't useful in complicated IDs of similar birds. But for beginning birders, it can still be a very useful tool.

    Head sheen can be quite useful in scaup ID and should not be totally disregarded, although it should never be used as the sole factor in an identification. Percentage wise, it is still more likely than not that a scaup with purple head sheen is a Lesser, and with green sheen a Greater.

    I'm not convinced it's not just some thing with domestic genes. I don't see a lot of black duck elements in the plumage.
