  1. Tawney Eagle, Kruger National Park, South Africa
  2. African White-backed vulture. This is an endangered species. We saw these at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in South Africa. They are endangered because poachers kill them for food, and natives kill them for their body parts to make traditional medicine. The Centre piles the carcasses of the animals they feed to the carnivores in a big pit and the birds can fly in and eat safely. It is not the most pleasant smelling place to visit.
  3. I wouldn't normally post pictures of the same bird twice, but last night we went out to look at the baby owl. It was sitting higher in the nest so we could see it slightly better. As we were watching, mom flew in and landed on the roof of the house next to the tree to monitor our behavior. We left so she would be comfortable returning to the nest.
  4. In the tree next to my driveway in Oro Valley, a Great Horned Owl has a nest high up in the tree. This growing baby owl is there peeking over the edge of the nest every day. The view is never going to get better as there is no vantage point any better then this, but never-the-less, it is pretty cool to watch this little bird taking in the view.
  5. African Gray Hornbill, Kruger National Park, South Africa
