  1. This guy is banging on this road sign every morning on our walk. I hear they do this to attract a mate. He's noisy and sounds like an impact wrench... Would like to find out exactly what kind of woodpecker this is. Near Portland, Oregon this morning near the Columbia River.
  2. Wow, I appreciate that help so much. So, the babies are out and about and growing already... I'm not sure of the time when eggs are laid and how long until they are hatched, then is it only a few months that they begin to look like this? Thanks akandula!
  3. This guy, or gal, looks like a mixture of Male and Female Red-winged Blackbird... I tend to think Male... What is going on here? Red wing is almost there but not pronounced, or did I get the name of this bird entirely wrong? Portland, Oregon today near the Columbia River. Thanks for your help on this.
  4. This explains a lot. I watch birds in our area constantly and this one has escaped me, until now, after I put out a Suet feeder, THEN they came out... Fruit and nuts and seeds not as interesting to them I guess... live and learn. Thanks to ALL who chimed in here on this bird I SHOULD KNOW... I appreciate.
  5. That's hilarious, and thank you for that tip. A great idea for photography!
  6. The first I've ever seen of this bird in our area today, March 16th, near Portland, Oregon by the Columbia River. Need help identifying this one please...
  7. Big thanks to everyone here for responding. A rather small bird but very beautiful also and will be nice to get close. I have put branches around for the birds to land on, but this one and has a friend also, stay high in the trees and then come down for one thing only, exactly as you see, the suet. Then he stays glued to that until flying off when done. I'll study how I'm going to get a picture anywhere other than hanging onto the feeder. In flight, good luck with that as he's got speed and does't hang around. Now I know he's a Downy Woodpecker... pretty neat. Thanks!
  8. Here's terrible, but another shot and shows the beak... Suet cage is about 5" square.
  9. Thanks to all for help and education. Very good place here with knowledgable folks attending I appreciate.
  10. Not a great photo but at least caught this. This bird showed up new as I just put up a Suet Cake feeder and likes it very much. I have never seen this bird in our area before so new to me. Can you help me with identity?
  11. Portland, Oregon this morning at the wetland this duck appeared and not sure of correct name. Can you help me?
  12. Thank You for chiming in on this Jefferson Shank, I think you have it! I appreciate. Ken
  13. Portland, Oregon in a wetland, this pair, the male almost has markings of a Lesser Scaup, but the bill is a darker color and the markings are somewhat different... I need help with this one.
