For me, the biggest benefit is the ability to snap a picture of a bird that may otherwise only present itself for less than two seconds, which is often not enough time to look at every field mark. Small passerines can be very difficult to identify by sound, and seeing a yellowish blur in a bush doesn't give me any confidence in identification. Of course, there are also times where I take a useless photo but I'm still able to identify the bird; I just have to remember to delete that photo later or I'll spend too much time trying to re-identify it.
The other case is the distance. I can zoom way further in on a photo than I can with binoculars. (If I had binoculars with ridiculous zoom, the challenge would become holding them steadily.)

A trip around Lake Mead has yielded a FOY Yellow-footed Gull, a rarity this far north. (I did get a chance to see this bird early last year as well.)

@IKLland That's indeed possible. That marina is very popular for people feeding the birds and fish, unfortunately unhealthy stuff like white bread, potato chips, and cheese popcorn.

I saw this bird this morning at Lake Mead Marina. I have seen a Mexican Duck at the marina fairly often during the winter, but I'm certain this one is not a (pure) Mexican Duck. However, I'm curious if it's just a molting Mallard or if it may be a Mallard Γ Mexican Duck hybrid. All the other male Mallards were in their brilliant breeding plumage.
Β»I'm pretty sure it's a molting Mallard, but I'd like your opinion.Β«

And with that, I actually have photographed this bird. I need more coffee.

π¦π¦π¦π¦I have not seen this bird, but I don't like this code due to its ambiguity.

Corn Creek was quite active this morning. Several rarities were reported. I managed great shots of a Varied Thrush (FOY), a Black-and-White Warbler (county first), and the Eastern Phoebe that is still hanging around. While I didn't get to see the Rufous-backed Robin, it hung around all winter two years ago, so I should still have a chance to see it later this year.

A very familiar bird, although the photo made it look a lot » paler « than usual.
