i just replayed today's game on and I like it. I'm not sure if shorter snippets would help me learn the songs any better though. I do see where longer snippets might spoil it for others as well though. Just thinking out loud here, but what if the song option was delayed until later in the game, say after the 3rd or 4th guess, that way the song wouldn't spoil the photo part of the game as much if the song is recognized right away and can help out with the ID if we're struggling with the photo.

Great suggestion, will definitely consider it...

edit: well, it might be silly for you but for me I want to keep it somewhat challenging 😉

Depending on the amount of the song available at a time, and depending on the person, this could make it too easy. I have some eye problems and thus rely heavily on sound ID so I will try tomorrow and see what I think. I am far from an expert on sound ID, so should still be fairly hard.

Today's is probably particularly easy as it's so common. Agreed however. I think if it stays I will end up adjusting it to play a lot less of the song at a time.

  3. Hey everyone!! First, thanks again for playing! Second, I am testing an experimental feature where the game will incrementally let you play pieces of the bird's song as you try to guess. It looks like this:

As this is experimental and I don't know if I'll be keeping in the game, I wanted to source feedback from you all! So if you do end up trying this out (it'll at least be available on today and tomorrow's game), let me know if you dislike it, like it, or have ideas for improvement. I am hoping it doesn't make the games too easy to win quickly. Let me know! Also, if you have technical issues, also let me know.

Birdie won't work for me either. I sent @Jagularr a private message to alert him of the issue.

Back up now, thanks for letting me know!!

P.S. stay tuned for a new feature that I'll be experimenting with...maybe...

  5. Hello friends!

I am rolling out an...interesting...feature to birdiegame. Each game will now have a 'discussion' section. I promise I am not trying to replace you, but thought it would be fun to have a place to complain or brag about how easy the ID was in a centralized location. You can 'like' comments and you can also report them. I will personally review every reported comment. Let's hope it doesn't all go to crap...let me know if things start going south or you are seeing errors, my email is onemillionwords17@gmail.com.

Your score will automatically be shown next to your comment, unless you post the comment while the game is in 'The Vault'.

I'm pretty iffy on this feature so let me know if you hate it / like it and we can always change or get rid of it. It will probably show up on your devices over the next few hours/days.

    I think you're looking for @Charlie Spencer

I also think you should be mining the id forum for tricky western hybrid gulls for future birdie games.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

That's not a bad idea. I'll keep that in mind...

Also please feel free to absolutely spam the photo submission with any interesting photos you guys take. We don't get enough submissions!

And merry christmas to you too!

  7. Which one of ya'll sent this "photo submission"? 😂😂😂😂

Now, on a serious note....are there any families you'd like to see more (or less) of?

(also, P.S., gulls are a weak and often ignored point for me, hence me trying to compensate in the past couple of weeks...)

As always, thank you for still playing this game!!

  8. Some users are reporting that today's game isn't working even when they answer correctly. This is due to some browsers caching the old list of answer choices, and today's answer is one of the ones that was renamed (my bad). If this happens to you, before completing the game, try to hard-refresh the browser (on desktop, this is typically CTRL + F5, and on mobile, it varies, but I know on IOS a trick is to turn airplane mode on, attempt to refresh the page, turn airplane mode off, and refresh again) (just don't delete your cache/cookies etc., that would delete your game data). If this messes up your stats, shoot me an email/dm and I can fix it. sorry!

  9. Hey everyone, pushed a couple of changes to the game today:

The bird list has been completely overhauled! I'd like to apologize for the issues that you guys encountered with the old list, it was dated and I had been using it without reviewing it much at all. Want to give a huge shoutout to someone named Brandon for curating and emailing me an updated list, which cut out a little over 150 of the original listed species, and renamed a bunch to keep them up to date. There are still a couple of 'incorrect' ones in there because I had to support the archived games for now.

Because this is sort of a 'big' update, I'm aware there might be flaws, so I'd appreciate it if you'd DM me if/when you find any issues with the new list, I'll fix them right away.

I also added a small feature that will link the revealed correct answer to the allaboutbirds page for the bird, thanks to Kelly for the idea.

    Again, thanks for playing.

  10. it's back up!!! sorry guys, the cheapo deployment service I use decided to add a nice little bug into their script and I wasn't aware it failed until now..

BTW if you care about your streak and this messed you up, lmk and I can help you 'fix' it

    birdie 🦉 #365: 🟥🟩

I have photographed this bird before.

@Jagularr There are definitely a lot of fun statistical questions that could come out of that data. Which birds were gotten the quickest and which had the most failures, by percentage of guessers for that game? Are certain families trickier? Do certain types of photos stump people? How many people have played over 300 games? 360? Between 2 and 15? These are rhetorical, of course, so you don't have to answer these particular questions. 🙂

This would be interesting. To see which birds people know best/worst.

Also, @Jagularr maybe you could add the macualy links to photos with them? Almost all of the photos on Ebird are underated. Just a suggestion.

Agreed. I'd say 90% of the time the photos are from flickr via creative commons website. However I agree, would be cool to link to those too regardless.

  12. Hey guys, just wanna say thanks so much for playing this game, as today we hit game 365, aka one year anniversary. I have some fun stats for you:

    As of right now,

The daily game has been completed 96135 times.

Over the past month, we've averaged 519 daily game completions per day.

The record for one day was 645 daily game completions, which happened to be yesterday.

(Note that all these stats do not include any plays in 'The Vault' (replaying old games). So there's probably more overall activity than is shown here.)

Here is the score distribution of all those plays:

(1 being correct in 1 guess, 2 being correct in 2 guesses, etc.)

I'm sure there's quite a few takeaways from the distribution here. Seems like people tend to get it quickly, or not at all. Maybe the difficulty isn't as balanced as it could be.

ALSO, We've received 195 photo submissions from 39 contributors. Huge special thanks to our top contributors, specifically "Bal Land" aka "Alien Bird", Ronan Pangie, Liam Wolff, Ann Pettigrew, Dina Perry, "Canada Birdwatcher", and Manny Salas. I try to use as many of the photo submissions as possible, and if I haven't used yours, I either will in the future, or it's because the bird was already recently used in the daily game, or the image is too low-resolution (e.g., Instagram links). But thank you so very much.

I've spent approximately 60-70 hours putting together these lil' games over the past year. I have basically left the gameplay bit un-changed from the beginning, so sorry if I've been ignoring feature requests 😰. It hasn't been super time consuming, but maybe soon we start sourcing an occasional game from you guys, to spice it up a bit?

Anyways, the game isn't super popular by any means, but it has amazed me at how a core group of people have stuck with it. It more or less has continued to very slowly grow in terms of number of players ever since it started. I basically posted it on a couple of birding forums last year and that's been it. Here's how the daily game completions have been growing over time:

So anyways, hope this was mildly interesting, and thanks again for playing. ♥

  13. Sorry about that guys. Thankfully someone called this to my attention: note to self: don't select photo at 1am again and take the author's word for what the species is 😁

pushing out the corrected name, this should not affect anyone's stats but if there are any issues lmk

I have a silly question about your game, @Jagularr. When we share our results, there is a bird icon before the game number. Sometimes it's a duck, eagle, owl, swan, etc, etc. Is there a method or pattern used to determine which bird is assigned to the game results or is it strictly a random thing?  It doesn't look like it's score related to individual games, which makes me think it's random, or do our previous scores influence which bird we get? Any significance at all with the assigned bird icon or is it just a random (for lack of a better word) decoration?

Great question, it is completely random, but now that you mention it that would've been cooler if it had some significance. Maybe I'll start mapping them to the score and you guys will have to figure it out 🙂

I like it being harder, an easy one is fun from time to time, but hitting the first guess or two every time gets boring eventually. .

Personally, I like it best when the first 3-4 crops don't show too much, making it a challenge, but the last two showing a lot, giving people not very familiar with the bird a chance.

Makes sense, I will definitely keep this in mind while making these.

    birdie 🦆 #277: 🟥🟨🟩

I have not seen this bird.

@Jagularr If you wanted an interesting way to switch it up, might I suggest the method the New York Times crossword puzzles are timed? Monday starts easy, then they get more difficult through Saturday. Sunday has a large grid, and Thursday has a trick (such as multiple letters in the same square).

Perhaps the analog here could starting with ABA Code 1 birds early in the week, using tricky photos on Thursday, then using ABA Code 4 or 5 on the weekends?

That's a neat idea. Maybe won't do exactly that, but it could be fun to throw in some real 'wild cards' on the weekends only, and start off the week a bit easier. Thanks for the suggestion!!

  15. Hi! I'm glad you all like the historic games feature, I spent the better part of the weekend on it. I also just added 'ranking badges' to the scorecard as a little gimmick, you'll probably notice it tomorrow. I haven't checked this thread in a looooong time, but if you guys have any suggestions for new features or improvements do let me know.

10 hours ago, Colton V said:

Adding on to what Kevin said, I have noticed that slowly over time less and less of the bird is visible in the first pic. In the beginning we would often get the entire tail but now we hardly get anything.

Noted. Definitely have room for improvement, this is likely a result of me trying to mix it up. I initially tried to make the game 'harder' when I realized how many people were absolutely acing these, and my goal was to make it just hard enough that the average score is somewhere in the 3-5 range, but it turns out that's difficult. People tend to either nail it immediately or just barely / not at all! I also try to rarely repeat the same species which I'm sure leads to some really obscure birds and polarizing score distributions, which may or may not be a good idea. Next step: create an AI to make the perfect crops 😈

Also, to the handful of people who have sent photo submissions, thank you so much, you guys are killing it and I am using them whenever I can!

@Jagularr Oh, I've got an idea. If a guess has a correct word in it (i.e. the word turns green), perhaps the tile for that guess should be yellow?

Trying this out. All guesses that partially match will show up as yellow tiles now. Partial matches were already shown on the guess list, this will just make it easier to tell.

Maybe a 'Pass' or 'Skip to Next Image' button for those of us who may be ID-challenged (like @lonestranger).

? oh I can relate. Actually, you can just click 'Guess' without selecting anything and it will skip to the next picture. If that isn't working let me know. Maybe I can make it clearer on there that that's allowed.

Like for the share-able text that you copy? I was considering that actually! I'll see about adding that in.

Thank you, and welcome to Whatbird!

Would you mind explaining the criteria you use for photo selection?  You may get more photos submitted if we know what you're looking for!

Thanks! Mostly just looking for high-resolution pictures, open to any North American species. The more variety the better, and the more fine detail available in the feathers, etc., the more interesting the crops can be.
