  1. Successfully fledged our second nest today. Last year she only had two broods, time will tell if she goes for three this year. It's already so hot here, that may play a big part.
  2. My brother sent me this from Georgia saying the Barn Swallows were getting ready to fledge. I don't think that is what they look like, so thought I would ask.
  3. These kids are funny. They know Mom is in there sitting on 5 new eggs.
  4. Wow, 21 days? Mine typically fledge at day 17. This last brood waited to day 18. We are up to 4 eggs in the second nest, so well on our way to more babies!
  5. I've never seen 6, that's interesting. Wonder if they are all viable? On another note, have you ever looked deep into a bird's throat? Obviously they thought they were getting fed, but I've never seen down deep like this. Makes me laugh.
  6. Haha! Smart little birds they are. I have found by watching that most egg laying takes place early in the morning. Not always, but for the most part. Since they don't incubate until the last egg is laid, there really wouldn't be a need for her to be around during the day once she has done her "business". Congrats!
  7. Right on schedule! Welcome little ones...
  8. I am by no means an expert, but I have watched Bluebirds for several years. I would not be too quick about removing a nest. Are you able to observe the box during the day to see if she is around? It is possible something happened to one of them. From what I have observed, Bluebirds will take a territory and wouldn't be quick to give it up. Patience is the key, as well as observation. Meanwhile, we have 5 eggs here and are on hatch watch for Monday. Been in the 70's all week, and predicted to stay that way, so she isn't spending a ton of time on the eggs except at night.
  9. Cold snap is gone, and she's been busy.
  10. We've had a couple of cold (relatively) nights. Checked the box this morning, and no eggs yet. We have one more cold night and then it's going to warm back up. Hopefully eggs by the weekend.
  11. I guess she was serious. Opened the box this morning to find this. She has been busy!
  12. I'm not sure if she is serious, but the female was taking nesting material in the box today. I did see a second female hanging around, and usually they don't really get busy until they drive the others all out. I'll check the box in a day or so and see what's going on.
  13. My first nest fledged on May 1, and by the 12th I had a new nest (different box) and 3 eggs. She ended up laying 5. It’s already SO HOT here in Southern Alabama, don’t know how she does it. I’m wondering if she’ll go for a third nest in these temps. Guess only time will tell.
  14. A couple of years ago, my 3 bluebird boxes were all used at the same time. One had a pair of bluebirds, another had chickadees and the third one was brown-headed nuthatches. The one and only time all boxes were used. I've had chickadees nest in them before, but that was a first for the nuthatches.
  15. My inept id skills tell me Loggerhead Shrike. Am I correct? Today in Lower Alabama. Thanks!
  16. I know this photo is bad, horrible lighting conditions today. Can anyone help me with what these are? Thanks from Lower Alabama.
  17. Are all of these Brown-headed Cowbirds? Lower Alabama. Thanks!
  18. Pretty sure these are swallows, just not sure which one. Lower Alabama. Thanks!
  19. Definitely a male (top) and female (bottom) but not sure about age.
  20. Just curious, do you use raccoon baffles on your boxes? So, I don't have any updates at all on my Bluebirds. Shortly after our second brood fledged, we packed up and moved to Alabama. I've gone back a couple of times tying up loose ends, and the birds are still there. Keep landing on the feeder poles that no longer have feeders on them.
  21. I would like to see you keep “Backyard Birds, Feeders and Food”
