Which hawk is this?
Scott Hubbard replied to Scott Hubbard's topic in Help Me Identify a North American Bird
This was my only photo, but you are making me feel better that it is not so easy to identify after all. -
Just landed in crape myrtle tree while working on my computer today in Glen Allen, VA. picture taken through my dirty window. I know this is probably a beginner identification, but I have more trouble with hawks that smaller birds. What key things would you look at here to determine if this is a Red-Tailed Hawk or a Red-Shouldered Haw. Some Red-Shouldered Hawks on Google images have a reddish brown chest, but then I find younger ones have a chest like this. Thanks, Scott H.

What type of sparrow is this?

OK. So, I was right in thinking it was not one of "the usual suspects"! Thank you! -

See at Henricus Park south of Richmond, VA yesterday. Probably just a usual sparrow, but I am not sure. It is that time of year when strange birds do come through. Thanks for your help, Scott H. -
Help identify these migratory ducks
Scott Hubbard replied to Scott Hubbard's topic in Help Me Identify a North American Bird
I see. I should have recognized them. It there had been a male, I would have. Thanks. -
Seen south of Richmond VA today. It's size was smaller than most other hawks. And the coloration on the head. What is the 1 thing that stands out that confirms this as a Cooper's Hawk. If it is. Thanks, Scott H.

Broad-winged Hawk Confirmation
Scott Hubbard replied to Scott Hubbard's topic in Help Me Identify a North American Bird
Wow. I give up. At least I thought I could look at the tail of a hawk and recognize a Red-Tailed Hawk. The banding/stripes don't fit my thinking but I know juveniles can have differences. Scott H. -
Why do I have so much trouble with hawks? They are so big! Seen on my neighbors roof a couple days ago in Glen Allen VA. The tail doesn't look red to me. It seemed too big for a Coopers Hawk and the tail stripes are so much wider than pictures on google. That leaves the most likely a Red-shouldered or Broad-winged. So I am going to say a Broad-Winged Hawk? Do Red-shouldered have tail stripes like this? Thanks, Scott H.

Taken south of Richmond VA today. Could these be Savannah sparrows? Perhaps the distance gives them a lighter coloration. Scott H.

Third and final request from my trip to Dutch Gap South of Richmond VA, today. I don't think it is House, Song, Chipping, Savannah. Could it be a swamp sparrow? Thanks, Scott H.

A type of flycatcher?
Scott Hubbard replied to Scott Hubbard's topic in Help Me Identify a North American Bird
So I guess that is rare for this area! Thank you all. I was at the Dutch Gap Area! I should have been more specific as to my location. I saw a lot of birds there today. Lots of Cedar Waxwings. I am going to post another picture for help on a hawk. Thanks, Scott H. -
See south of Richmond, VA today. I included the 2nd pic since you can see the shape of the head. Why is there always a branch in the way to mess up the focus! Thanks, Scott H.

Little Gray Bird? Flycatcher?
Scott Hubbard replied to Scott Hubbard's topic in Help Me Identify a North American Bird
Before anyone responds. This isn't just a female goldfinch with no yellow? The behavior was so different which is what caught my eye. -

Seen in my backyard in Glen Allen, VA, today. Could it be a flycatcher of some kind? Thanks, Scott H.,
