How about Red-winged Blackbird? I was listening to some today and noticed a similar sound.

Really? I'm pretty sure it's like a scolding call they do. I can't think of anything else it could be anyway.

It finally came to me! The duh-da is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Ah gotcha. I haven't been out there so I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions as to where to go.

It's about 4 hours from the Utah/Wyoming border to the South Hills. It's a long jaunt but it's worth it! You could stop at Antelope Island State Park as well. Are you camping along the way or staying at hotels?
