  1. Listening to some of Cornell's clips, I think that's a pretty good guess. I'm an east coaster, so not familiar enough with birds out your way!
  2. That's part of why we're here, to have discussions and learn! Another thing to look at here is the tail shape. Rails have tails that come to a point. This bird does not.
  3. And here is a bander showing a young male cardinal still getting his red in, but the beak is entirely orange. The sixth photo: https://braddockbaybirdobservatory.wordpress.com/2014/08/23/so-many-good-birds/
  4. Yeah, that was throwing me, too, but he looks messy enough. . .
  5. We used to have a gull guy back in the day named Aberrant. It's a bummer when we lose specialized members like that!
  6. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ I just don't know of any other gulls with a black head and white spots on the primaries like that.
  7. With that bill, I'd call it a Dunlin.
  8. Everything but the missing eye crescents looks right for Franklin's, so I have no idea. 🤷‍♀️ Just a weird one?
  9. I think Boat-tailed, but don't hold me to it.
  10. Correct! That is a European Starling mocking you! 😋
  11. Well, the underwings of a wood stork have enough black that I've seen them look completely black in certain light. Little Blue Herons are completely blue as adults, and completely white when they are immature. Unless I'm forgetting a phase where they have both.
  12. My first thought is a wood stork. So check that out. I'll keep thinking.
  13. Just clarifying: the picture posted is NOT what you saw?

  15. Close! This is a Palm Warbler. Note that the yellow is underneath the tail as well. In a Yellow-rumped, it's a more defined patch just on the rump, and the undertail is white.

  17. Yeah, but I was driving around and stuff, not just sitting there at the water for five hours. I had hoped the Western Kingbird would come back, but no dice. Did get Brewer's Blackbirds, though, which I needed for the life list, so it wasn't all for naught.
  18. Congrats, by the way! I was out there from just before 9 a.m. until around 2, freezing my tail off. The wind was bad!
  19. Looks like those Horned Grebes at Turkey Pond that I saw today! 😄
  20. Ooh, the Canvasback are new for this winter season. When I was there Monday, there were a good number of Ring-necked, some Blue-Winged Teal, and then Scaup and a ton of Shovelers. I also had a King Rail pop out and give me a good look at it. Tell the Siskins they need to come give the goldfinches at my house a run for their money, lol.
