  1. I've been attending bird walks with our local Audubon Society for almost 8 years. In the last couple years, though, they've changed. People are on their phones almost the entire time, looking DOWN at their Merlin apps and getting other (inexperienced) birders' hopes up by saying things like "Merlin is picking up a [insert rare bird here]." These are mostly older people, too. Now I am guilty of using AI (iNaturalist) to help me find out what something is, but I don't use it in the field and most things I've identified that way I can't remember because I never learned more about it. Anyway....someone please tell me there are still new birders out there who are learning by observation and are putting in the effort to figure out what they are hearing and seeing.
