Baldwin co. AL Sept 2021 Hi, All. We have had resident Barred Owls for the 20+ years we have lived in our suburban neighborhood. They call frequently (and raucously) at night and commonly in the daytime, also, and it is not unusual for them to fly through or perch for a time in the yard. My question: Other than mating season & contact calls between mates/family members, at what other times would a Barred Owl hoot? I ask, because a couple of days ago, in the late afternoon (still full daylight), a lone Barred was hooting from fairly low in a tree, then dropped to the ground behind some shrubbery, then flew back into the canopy to a different perch. It looked as though he/she were taking prey, but I thought it odd the owl would call attention to itself with hooting if that were the case. There was no reply from any other owl that I could hear. Thoughts?

18 Jan 2021 Baldwin co. AL No pics b/c he flew before I could get him. Large, apparent raptor with rufous-y back and wings high in a tree in my neighborhood this evening. He was not upright, he was lying down & across a branch. His feathers were "fluffed". When he flew off, his belly looked light compared to the rest of him and the under side of his wing tips looked dark. He was too far for me to discern any streaking/banding patterns. I think it was a raptor, but it was a weird perching place for a Red-Tailed so I was favoring Red-Shouldered, thinking, perhaps the wing pattern wasn't apparent due to distance? But that weird lying-down posture? I don't know what to make of that. It reminded me of an anting Blue Jay. He didn't seem to be injured when he flew off.

Good morning, All. While watching my feeders this AM, I saw one Carolina Wren take food from a fruit & seed cake and feed it to another Carolina Wren. I've never seen Carolina Wrens feed together, much less feed each other, so this was exciting. Would they be a mated pair or parent-offspring (I know it's early, so not sure if they have had time to mate and reproduce?)? Baldwin co. (coastal), AL
