ID - Hairy or Downy Woodpecker?
Tinywizard posted a topic in Help Me Identify a North American BirdHello! First time seeing this bird from my Brooklyn apartment window today and was stunned by how pretty it was. I think I am correct in identifying it as either a Hairy or a Downy woodpecker, but I’d love to know which one it is. It was in an oak tree outside my window and then flew to my suet cake feeder. The suet cake feeder measures 5.6” x 4.8” for size reference. IMG_5133.MOV
Downy of Hairy Woodpecker Part II
twitchy posted a topic in Help Me Identify a North American BirdThis woodpecker was spotted today. I cannot tell if it is a downy or hairy woodpecker. Are those black bars on the outer tail feathers? Honestly, I am not sure where to look. Initially I thought the beak looked long. It was only at the feeder for a few seconds so I did not get a chance to observe much behaviour. My location is the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. Thanks!

Yesterday (5/31/19) at dusk, I briefly spotted a uniquely marked bird visiting my hummer feeder. It had a red or deep orange crown, possibly entire head. The body appeared black/white or gray/white. It hovered a moment before landing, exactly the way my ruby-throats do. The low light and brief visit didn't allow time for great details, much less a pic. My first thought was a downy woodpecker due to petite size, but I don't know if hovering is something they do. My other thought was a rufous, but I think that's a winter bird in my area. I'm very new to birding but have recently done a lot of research on common birds in west GA. I live in a heavily wooded area, only water source is a neighbor's one acre lake about 1/4 mi away. I feel there are possibilities I'm unaware of. Any ideas on what type of bird this could be? Thanks! Kym
Which Maryland Woodpecker?
gnuser posted a topic in Help Me Identify a North American BirdI'm a first time user of this forum. I hope you can help me ID this bird. The bird was perhaps bigger than a robin but smaller than a crow. I shot pics of it in the late afternoon near the end of November in the woods of upper Rock Creek Park in Montgomery County, Maryland. It was pretty high up-- maybe 30 or 40 feet? It may have been part of a small group, but the other birds were in the area but not close-by. I made a composite image out of 8 photos-- cropping in on the subject. These are all the same particular bird. I suspect it is a red-bellied or downy woodpecker, but it seems to have the wrong head color arrangement. I'd like to hear your ID, and why you think so. If there is more info you'd like from me, please ask. Thanks, Gnuser
