About Me

Location

  1. Taken on 10-13-2022 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. Is this an Intersex Mallard?
  2. Taken on 9-19-2022 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale, CA. I'm having a hard time with this one.
  3. Taken on 9-19-2022 on the Los Angeles River in Glendale, CA. Is this one identifiable?
  4. Taken on 9-15-2022 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale CA. This was not the subject of these photos, but rather in the background. I think its a Song Sparrow, but not confident.
  5. Taken on 9-15-2022 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale, CA. I need help with this one. The lighting is not too good. Taken at sundown from below.
  6. Taken on 6-30-2022 in Glenoaks Canyon, Glendale, CA For a Calypte species, if the tail does not extend beyond the wingtips, does that mean it is a Costa's no matter what sex or age? Thanks.
  7. Taken on 6-16-2022 in Glenoaks Canyon, Glendale, CA.
  8. Taken on 3-2-2022 in Glendale, CA in native brush along a fire road. Is this a species of gnatcatcher?
  9. I need help with this one. Taken on 3-2-2022 in Glendale, CA.
  10. Taken on 4-1-2022 in Glenoaks Canyon, Glendale, CA. This hawk was flying with around with two Red-tailed Hawks for a few minutes. I think it might be a dark-morph Red-tailed, but I'm not sure.
  11. Taken on 1-5-2022 in the afternoon on the Los Angeles River between Burbank Channel confluence and the Riverside Dr. bridge in Glendale, CA. I usually don't attempt to ID immature gulls (and I think this is one). There were just two gulls standing in the water (a Western and this one) and I'm just curious what this is. I have a couple guesses, but could be way off. I looked away to photograph some other birds and was going to come back to this one to get better shots, but when I turned back it was gone.
  12. Taken in the late afternoon over the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. I identified several White-throated Swifts and Northern Rough-winged Swallows. This was the only one that looked different. The tail looks like Barn Swallow, but I'm not sure that the rest of it does.
  13. Taken in the late afternoon over the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA.
  14. Taken on 12-11-2021 at the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. I think this is an American Goldfinch, but whenever I think that, I'm usually wrong. I've seen hundreds of Lesser Goldfinches, but only 2 or 3 American Goldfinches. This one doesn't feel quite like a Lesser to me.
  15. Taken on 12-11-2021 above the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. I think I know what this is, but not confident.
  16. Taken on 11-15-2021 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. At first I thought this might be an intersex Mallard, but then thought maybe a Mallard X Green-winged Teal hybrid.
  17. Taken on 11-15-2021 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. This single scaup was hanging out with a group of 6 mallards. No other scaups seen on a 1-mile stretch of river. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a scaup on the Los Angeles River before. Can this one be identified? I don't have the expertise. It bothers me that it's eye does not appear to be yellow, but it is on the shaded side.
  18. Taken on 11-15-2021 above the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. Is this a Merlin? I've never seen one before, but I think they should have a white throat. This was a very small raptor, very fast, sleek and quick turns. It appeared from behind me, swooped down above some reeds, made an almost instantaneous 90 deg. turn and jetted away. I've never seen anything like it.
  19. Taken on 10-19-2021 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale, CA. What do you say?
  20. Taken on 10-19-2021 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale, CA. I have only seen American Goldfinches a couple of times and I'm not very good at identifying them. I know the lighting and colors are not so good in this photo, but does this look like an American or a Lesser?
  21. Taken on 10-17-2021 at a residential home in Glendale, CA. There were some Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warblers around, and I know an immature female Audubon's can look like a Mrytle. Can this bird be identified as to whether its a Mrytle or Audubon's? Thanks.
  22. Taken in the morning on 10-9-2021 at Lower Scholl Canyon Park in Glendale, CA. When I first looked at these photos, I thought this bird looked different than most House Finches that I've seen. But the more I look at it, the more it looks like a House Finch. I've never seen a Purple Finch or Cassin's Finch or Rosy Finch before (that I know of), so I wanted to make sure.
  23. Taken on 10-9-2021 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. I believe this is a teal. Can it be identified?
  24. Taken on 10-9-2021 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk in Glendale, CA. Is the bird with the mostly white head a leucistic Least Sandpiper?
  25. Taken on 7-25-2021 on the Los Angeles River at Glendale Narrows Riverwalk. As I mentioned before, there were well over 100 Mallards on this day -- mostly juveniles. These two ducks seem to look different from most of the others. I'm not sure if they are just Mallards that are maybe younger than most of the other juveniles, or if they are something else.
