Is this an American Kestrel? Posting on behalf of someone else, seen in Haymarket, VA yesterday. Tail looks too short for a Coopers/Sharpy and the general markings are throwing me off. Seems too small for a Red-Shouldered to my eyes .... The Merlin app gave me two results which I’m really questioning its accuracy. . 1) N Goshawk. - while they’re not unheard of in the area (coming down from the Shenandoah mountains/Blue Ridge some years, etc), they are fairly uncommon. 2) Short-eared Owl. - seriously? I’m almost certain that this is not an owl LOL! Thanks!
Apologies for the lousy photo - it was really hard to capture and gone in a flash among the leaves which it camouflaged well in (and I used my iPhone to snap the back of the original camera screen). This little energetic beauty was seen yesterday, October 9, in Broadlands Wetlands Nature Preserve in Northern Virginia. To me, it looks most like a female Cape May warbler especially with the apparent white wingbar patch on the shoulder. That, or maybe a Black-Throated Green Warbler... Or something entirely different?? Thanks so much!
Hello: Can folks help confirm if I ID'd these birds photographed in Shenandoah National Park, VA correctly? Birds photos are in this short video, ID'd with a subtitle. Some shots are a bit blurry, sorry. Any help is greatly appreciated! Video: https://youtu.be/JUm-XuDjafs Thanks, Dave O.
