Critter time..

Snow in the San Antonio region of Texas is usually something that happens once in a decade.  We brought Lola home from the breeder near Tulsa Oklahoma in advance of a snow storm two years ago.  Lola has decided snow is a good thing!  We spent one night without power (in an all-electric house) when the outdoor temp went down to 7 degrees F.  The next day we lost water pressure from the public utility.  We are now in a hotel in Boerne 20 miles from the house with three dogs that weigh seventy to eighty pounds.

Wind Chill Warnings and Hard Freeze Warnings are in effect across
all of South Central Texas tonight through noon today. A Winter
Storm Warning goes into effect at 6 pm this evening through
tonight for most of South Central Texas. Across western portions
of South Central Texas where winter precipitation should be
lighter, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 pm this
evening through tonight.

Travel will remain difficult tonight as ice and snow persist on
some roads and water on other roads refreezes tonight. Scattered
power outages are also occurring.

The coldest air since 1989 has settled over the area. Lows of zero
to 15 degrees and winds up to 10 mph could bring wind chill values
of 10 below zero to 5 above zero. These values can lead to
hypothermia for anyone outdoors.

I just realized I haven't contributed any of my critter photos to this thread. Here's a few of my favourites.

After an afternoon of hiking the trails and hand feeding the birds 10 years ago, we spotted this young coyote on the drive home and realized it wasn't alone.

My brother was kind enough to pull over and let me out of the truck to get a few shots of these white-tailed deer back in 2013. I don't think I have seen more than one deer at a time since them.

Felonious Intent

Felonious Intent - Felon shoves his way between the front seats.  He wants to take over the driving chores from my wife.  We are returning home after two nights in a hotel following the loss of all water and power delivery to our home in Central Texas during a record winter storm that resulted in a low temp of 7 degrees F with snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Thanks for your concern Avery.  We are safely home.  Highways through San Antonio with their flyovers were blocked off.  We had to take the feeder roads and what would normally be a 30 minute drive from Boerne turned into a 90 minute crawl.  Electrical power to our home has been restored so we have heat up to 60 degrees.  We have no water pressure.  The swimming pool provides plenty of water for flushing toilets if you carry it in a bucket.  A supply of bottled water provides for drinking and cooking.

I feel for everyone in Texas that is going through this.  I've been without power for a week after a storm and it's not fun.  At least we had a wood burning stove to heat water and canned stuff for dinner.   I wish I could loan you our generator.   Just remember that at some point you'll look back and laugh at all this.

My wife and I survived more than twenty winters in the Washington DC area with respites for embassy duty in Mexico and Costa Rica.  The worst winter was more than twenty years ago.  We had three small children and three large hairy Bouvier des Flandres dogs.  At that time we lived in a house located on a pipe stem off of a cul de sac.  We had a long driveway that ascended a twenty degree grade to the street level from the garage.  We had learned to park our vehicles at the top of the grade when ice or snow was expected.  That particular winter we experienced a blizzard that deposited drifts that accumulated above the door handle on my car.  The power was out for more than five days.  There was no hope of a snow plow.  We did have a functioning fireplace and a cord of oak wood that normally served as fuel for the Texas style barrel smoker in the backyard.  We bedded down the three kids in front of the fireplace in their sleeping bags and the dogs were delighted to join them.  They were quite comfortable.  My wife and I shivered in the upstairs bedroom beneath a foot high mound of blankets and quilts.  We kept a fire going in the smoker and with camping kettles we had a constant supply of boiling water for tea and coffee and a pot of ever replenished stew.  Our coffee was in the form of whole roasted beans so we had to grind them in a mortar and pestle.  I was standing on two feet of packed snow when I leaned over the grill to broil steaks.  I did a roast leg of lamb one night and the fat drained out of the smoker onto the snow bank where my oldest bouvier went into ecstasy at the discovery of lamb fat snow cones.

You are correct that these are treasured family memories.
