RobinHood
Southern Ontario today. Apparently these just became "rare" so I need to provide details. I was too slow to catch them on the water but now wondering if the bird on the right (no obvious white patch on wings) is an immature or are the wing patches of females less distinct? They were together on the water and took off together. Thanks.
akiley
Shape and structure look fine for Common Goldeneye for the right bird as well.

You're seeing the underside of the bird and wings. https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/210603381#_ga=2.93569684.846106615.1587717351-709870112.1583439902

Yes, I knew that but my guides and at least your first link still show a white patch, very distinct for the male and not quite so distinct for the female, which is why I was asking the question. Appreciate the input. Edited May 12, 2020 by RobinHood
