Leucistic/Melanistic Birds

Recommended Posts

After encountering a swallow I had trouble IDing, until Liam helped me out, I figured a thread of these guys would be cool. The mutation has always fascinated me.

I searched for a topic like it, but didn't find one. So, if one already exists, apologies.

My first melanistic bird, a Northern Rough-winged Swallow. (Which incidentally, Liam had a similar bird in the same location six years ago. Is it the same bird, or an offspring, or just a coincidence? We'll never know!)

Palm Warblers normally have white tail spots.

Sure enough it was in my guide, I just hadn't noticed it (either in the guide or on the birds) - I think it was the one sided variation that caught my attention on this one.

Thanks for the tip.

Is peanut still around?

Yup! She became an almost daily visitor and was in my yard about 2 days ago.

I think someone else put up a feeder near me and stole all my birds as there’s been virtually no one at my feeders the last two days, when I was averaging over 50... Hoping they come back and bring her with them. Need to get some more pictures of her

A friend sent me this picture of a Downy Woodpecker that is...buffy. All of the "white" feathers are a tan color. Has anyone seen this before? What's going on?

I can't tell if it's just buffy, if it's the lighting, or what it is. Certainly not a bird I've seen in Missouri. I think some western populations (either Rocky Mountains or Pacific, can't recall off the top of my head) have mostly buffy underparts. Still a cool bird, regardless.
