Unknown Georgia Bird

Recommended Posts

Found this bird in the north Georgia mountains and have no idea what it is! Accidentally disturbed its nest while doing some trail maintenance. It is a ground nesting bird living under a tree/on exposed roots. It does not look like it from the picture (was trying to take a fast picture and not disturb it further), but the color of the features was a subtle bluish gray. Originally I did not realize there was a nest, but the bird flew out and was seeming to try to lead me away from it by pretending it could not fly. Very small bird that would fit comfortably in one hand, no larger than a cardinal. Black eyes and a short, black, cone-like (or maybe all-purpose) beak. If anyone has any idea of what this bird might be I would love to get some ideas!

Sounds like a catbird...

Yes, I agree with the Gray Catbird. Blue-gray, black eyes, black conelike beak, no larger than a cardinal, this would most likely be a Gray Catbird. Did it make any sounds? If so, what did they sound like? Catbirds usually nest in shrubs, but it's possible for them to nest on the roots of a tree. I can't see the photo, I don't know why but it isn't blue like the usual website links are. I hope I was able to help.

That sounds perfect, but the pictures I am finding of catbirds on the internet are not matching up with the one I have. Hopefully I uploaded the image correctly this time. The bird I found has a very distinct crown pattern which I have not been able to find in an Eastern birds book that I have. Three white lines, two that look like eyebrows and one going down the middle of the head. I do not recall hearing the bird make any sounds.
