Hi,

Can any more experienced birders out there help me with this ID?  Are these medium-sized wading birds Dowitchers (Bonus if anyone is able to tell me Long- or Short-billed)?

(Seen earlier this May in Edwin B. Forsythe NWR – outside Atlantic City, NJ.)

Thanks,

Steve

Number 2 is a Dowitcher. The rest are really confusing me. For the third birds, I would have to place them as yellowlegs. I don't think they are solitary, hard to tell in this lighting, but no real eye ring visible. I would go Lesser. The Fourth bird I believe is another Yellowlegs, but it almost looks like Stilt Sandpiper I've seen. I think it might be a weird angle. I'm stumped on the first bird. Almost looks like a Phalarope.

All of these are Lesser Yellowlegs except for the 2nd photo, which is a Dowitcher sp.

I would lean Short-billed for the Dowitcher. While I would leave it unidentified, it has a very straight suprecillium, with a white belly, and stronger chevron shaped markings on the belly.

Thank you, all, for your inputs.

I may have unwittingly made it harder on everybody: If I'm trying to remember back to this day, and I'm not mistaken, I seem to think 1&2 and 3&4 show the same birds.

(As I've been finding out, this just goes to further show how much angle/pose can confound an issue!)

Just to be clear, 1 and 2 are not the same bird.

1 is a Lesser Yellowlegs

2 is a Short-billed Dowitcher (griseus subspecies)

3 are Lesser Yellowlegs

4 is Lesser Yellowlegs

I'll trust your observation skills over my memory on that one.  Thanks.
