These look like House Finches, male and female.  Red well down the male's breast, conical seed-cracking bill.

I am familiar with house finches. These just looked much bigger from where i was standing, but you are probably right. Maybe they are taller in California!

It's the angle.  Seeing them from below elongates the bodies visually.  If everything looks right except the size, go with the other factors.  I had a House in the shade today that looked as big as a cowbird.  Fortunately, others in the group corrected me.
