three-toed wookpecker in MA?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

a bird crashed into a window today, was sitting still for a while so I could take a photo while figuring out what to do and waiting to see if it would recover. Decided it needed help but as soon as I approached it, it flew off. Phew. Wishing the little friend well, I would like to know who she/he was? Closest match I could find is the three-toed woodpecker but is that right? The info page suggests they only live further up North than MA? Any hints welcome.

Cheers,

Alex

Welcome to Whatbird!

That's a Downy Woodpecker. American Three-toed Woodpeckers don't have spots on their outer tail feathers. I'm glad that it was okay!

This is a female downy woodpecker based on the barring on the back, short bill and lack of red on the back of the head

Sniped! I should have known I wouldn't be the first🤣

That's it, thanks a lot. No idea why I have not managed to find this, the info page even has a picture of the bird spreading its wings so you can see the pattern as it is in my picture. Thanks again, friends.
