zbird
I was running errands earlier today and while I was driving, a large bird flew across the interstate towards a farm. I couldn't get a good look at it or a picture. It was great blue heron or sandhill crane sized - very large. It was pale on its underside, but what struck me most was that it had what looked like rufous red tail feathers that were fanned out as it flew away from me. I can't find any pictures of sandhill cranes or blue herons with this coloration. Any ideas? This was in central KY.
Charlie Spencer
Red-tailed Hawk?
zbird
I didn't think so, because I thought it looked bigger and longer, and had a long thin neck like a crane does. However, it does fit the best with the coloration, and I was driving, so I didn't want to look at it for too long. Could have been a red-tailed hawk! Maybe I'll see it again and get a better look next time I go out ?
Benjamin
Did the bird have long legs that trailed well behind the tail? If not, it's a raptor, and most likely a Red-tailed Hawk
zbird
I thought it did, but now I am second guessing myself! Oh well. Whatever it was will be one of my life's great mysteries.
