Mid June in Edmonton Alberta Canada  I spotted a robin to blue jay size basically all black bird with 2”(?) dark pointed bill appparently feeding in loose soil under spruce tree. Front is possibly flecked with white, tail feathers end square with yellow tips, spot of red 3/4”(?) on back of neck. Very brief encounter , sorry no photo, but am dead certain about the yellow and red bits. Thanks in advance for any help.

The only bird that I can think of around here would be a Northern Flicker, as they have the yellow/orange tips, a red dot on the neck, and would be on the ground. Yet, they are definitely not all black.
