Florida, January.  The spots look larger to me than I would expect on a Yellow-crown Night Heron, so I'm thinking Black-crowned.  But the beak is dark without the yellow like a Black-crowned would have.  Which one would this be?   Any other field marks I should be looking for?    Thanks as always!_MG_8992_edited-1-1.thumb.jpg.e848f398e5ccc11e2e90c0c24bec8809.jpg

I agree with Yellow-crowned.  Additional field marks I like for Yellow-crowned are:

-more of a darker gray vs a lighter brown of a Black-crowned (though easier to notice when they're together )

-coverts show series of thin white edging/lines, which are present here but which a Black-crowned doesn't show.  Sibley also has a good illustration of these.
