HamRHead
Today at Lake Thurmond near Augusta, GA. Lousy photos--zoomed and cropped. Common? Thanks.
Charlie Spencer
Are these the same bird? The first photo shows a white patch between bill and eyes that doesn't appear to be in the second (lousy ? ) photo, and not as distinct in the third. Either way, great migrant!
HamRHead
20 minutes ago, Charlie Spencer said: Are these the same bird? I had the same question but attributed it to lighting (and the aforementioned photo quality). But now that you mention it, they look different in other respects. The first bird, in addition to white on the forehead, has a white breast and belly, whereas the second bird appears to have gray farther up the belly and the stance is a bit different. I can't quite decipher the tail and primaries on either bird. I'm not sure where the third bird fits in. For what it is worth, the buoy is the same but it was vacated, twice, briefly while I was watching. Maybe they were playing musical buoys--a favorite game of terns. Exact location was Clarks Hill Lake near the dam.
HamRHead
Any more input? Should I put it/them down a Common/Forster's?

HamRHead
@psweet, am I out of luck with these guys? I'm guessing there is not enough detail for diagnosis. Would I be okay submitting them as Common/Forster's? Thanks.
HamRHead
Just a follow up for what it may be worth: I reached out to two people outside of the forum. Both said these are Forster's. Just to be on the safe side, I submitted bird 1 as Forster's based on light primaries, lack of carpal bar, and bill color that leans toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Bird number 2 is probably a Forster's for the same reasons but I submitted it as Common/Forster's. Both have been confirmed on that basis.
