While there are good plumage characters to assist in the visual ID of such birds, only one not-yet-tested-in-the-field character is shown at all well in the above photo. Juvenile Eastern Juvenile Western Comparing these two photos, there is a difference in pattern in the lower scapulars. On the Eastern, the white fringe does not extend to the tip, whereas on the Western -- and on the above-pictured Lincoln bird, the fringe is complete.
