bo nelson
Odd photo I know. I was trying to get a shot of a pair of Summer Tanagers in southern AZ today and it looks like I'm about to be attacked by the male. My question is about the other bird, female (as I thought at the time) or is it a juvenile? Thanks

Tony Leukering
It's molting, so by definition is not a juvenile. Considering the dull plumage on most of it, I'd go with a young-of-the-year Summer, but wouldn't put a lot of money on it. And, if it were a juvenile, there's approximately a 50-50 chance that it's both a female and a juvenile.
