Common or Fish Crow

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Came across this photo when I was clearing off my memory card. I remember taking it because I thought it may be a Fish Crow.

The lighting was very bad, but is it identifiable from the "silhouette" the beak looks "sleeker" than a common crow, no?

Taken in mid-June in Elora, Ontario near the river at the gorge.

Thanks in advance

The only reliable way to differentiate Fish and American Crows (other than by length of certain primaries in flight) is by voice.

I don't think I'll get any sound out of this photo no matter how much manipulation i do. Thanks for the info. I'll have to listen to some recordings so I know for future crow encounters.

Given the location, there's very little chance this is a Fish Crow, I think. The only records in the area this year have been right on the shores of Lake Ontario. There were a few records a bit south of you in 2012 (around Guelph), and one record at Belwood Lake that same year.
