At Paynes Prairie near Gainesville, Fla.

I was just at Sweetwater yesterday. My husband and get down there as often as we can. We've only been to Paynes a couple of times. How's the birding? Any suggestions for birding it efficiently?

I was mostly raised in N Florida about 25 miles from Paynes Prairie, but I left there in 1973. I still have family back there so I try to get to the Prairie when I go back for a visit. On the north side there are trails that lead out into the Prairie, and on the south side there is a parking area with trails through the woods.

There is quite a diversity of birds there year-round, but winter is the time to see all the migratory birds with tons of Sandhill Cranes. Wish I could be more specific, but I've been gone from the area so long I don't know all that much about it anymore!

I don't think you will be disappointed if you go to either end of it, though. Maybe someone who is more familiar with it can give you some better info. ?

How did you identify it? To my untrained eye they all look the same when they're this tiny.

Not too many lungless salamanders in the Portland area...

Location narrowed it down a lot.

Okay, how did you rule out Western Red-backed? Are there any lunged salamanders in Portland? (keep in mind I don't know anything about salamanders... at all)
