stitch58
Ran into this little one at a local wildlife preserve & was wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this. I was walking along the trail & heard a couple branches snap behind me. I turned around to see what it was & saw this tiny fawn about 20 yards away in the brush. It wasn't much bigger then an average size cat & was pretty wobbly on it's legs so I'm guessing it wasn't much more then a couple days old. What made it extraordinary was it actually ran unsteadily towards me making a noise akin to crying & when it got close enough it actually started rubbing up against my legs!! I was kind of in shock & wasn't sure what to do but I finally crouched down slowly & it allowed me to pet it on it's side & scratch it behind the ear which it seemed to like very much. I didn't try but I'm pretty sure it would have allowed me to pick it up. I realized though the mother was probably not to far off somewhere so I tried to leave after taking some pictures but every time I moved it would start to follow me. I crouched down again & pet it for a few more minutes & when I stood back up this time it slowly made it's way back into the brush & disappeared. The only thing I can think of is that it was hungry & saw me as a possible source of food?? It seemed pretty skinny when I was petting it. I figure it left when it realized it wasn't getting any food from me. Anyone else had any similar situations or possible other explanations? It sure made my day though!

I hope the Mom was okay! This is what this encounter makes me wonder. This time of year food should be easy to find so Mom should be able to stick close. I doubt Mom would have allowed the fawn to get so close to you... Since you apparently didn't see Mom I wonder if something happened to her.

Later when I was on my way back I did see a doe in the same general area & another a bit further on with 2 older fawns so hopefully that was a good sign. It's a popular place too with a lot of human foot traffic so if it is actually in trouble hopefully others will come across it.
Clip
One of the parks we love to bird is bordered by the St. John's River which carries a lot of shipping/boating traffic. We had to watch as these two huge ships approached each other. Nothing happen but they did have to come pretty close to each other. Once in awhile we see Dolphins escorting the cargo ships out to the ocean.

They're very common, but you hardly ever see them unless you flip cover (boards, sheet metal, rocks, etc) to find them.
