About 50 feet up in a sycamore tree, my wife was scanning for owls or other birds  when she gasped. In her binocs was a Black Rat Snake instead. Wasn't expecting to ever see a snake that high!

There's a bird walk on the last Saturday of the month at Saluda Shoals Park (Columbia, SC).  There's a small pond that's maintained to teach kids about wetlands.  In March '19, somebody spotted the first case opening.  We found several more within fifty feet, some hatching, some not.  That was good because some were still around to open a few days later when a school group came through.

I don't normally shoot macro.  The little buggers may have been 1/4" long.

I remember as a kid one year there was a bloom of these guys.  They were almost impossible to see on the cement.  All I could see were their shadows as hundreds moved away from me as I walked

I was reading on my deck one warm spring day several years ago when I felt this tiny little movement on my arm.  I looked down and there was one of the tiny bugs creeping through my arm hair.  Peripherally I notice more movement.  Mama Mantis had laid her egg sac inside the hollow tube frame of the folding deck chair.

That doesn't look anything like the coyotes I see around here!

It is pretty much accepted that most, if not all, of the Ontario coyotes are a mix of Coyote and Grey Wolf.

This was one of the largest I have seen recently and was the same size or possibly slightly larger than a German Shepherd. It was stalking around some sewage lagoons mid-morning so lots of good meals in the area.

I think elsewhere in North America the coyotes are typically somewhat smaller and perhaps look less "wolf like" - but limited experience so maybe not.

I've seen lots of Coyotes in several states.....Wyo, Ala, Ga, Fla, and Calif., as well as a few while passing through other Western states. There is a very wide range of variety among them in all these different places, as well as variety within the same state. Back in the early 80's I was driving through southern Ga and saw what I thought must be a Red Wolf. It was very similar to the photo RobinHood posted above except it was more reddish. I decided later it was a Coyote after doing some research. Below is a link to an interesting article about the Red Wolf that I just found.
