The "Other" things you see when Birding

Recommended Posts

@Seanbirds I have a few for you....

This little guy was nearly 400 foot above the nearest water, but to me looked like a water turtle of some sort. This was in the very south east corner of Oklahoma.

Really I am amazed I saw it it was so small, and blended in perfectly with the ground.

Your little guy is NOT a water lover.  Please don't dump him in the pond thinking you're doing him a favor.  He'll DROWN.

I don't generally move wild animals around, I figure they know what they are doing and are supposed to be there. The only time I have moved a turtle, was moving it out of the middle of the road.

Yeah, just checking.  There've been a couple of incidents around here when well-intentioned individuals 'returned' critters to what they thought were the correct environments.

Three-toed Box Turtles are actually quite adept at swimming (If they want to be), but your point still stands. I agree.

That looks a lot like a wingless wasp known in the southeast as a 'Red Velvet Ant'.  Also known as a 'Cow-killer Ant', since the bite is most entertaining.

I don't believe that is what it is, for one I see those, and this does not look like one at all, it's body build is totally different, and the coloring isn't really the same, also this bug was trying to fly.

I could be wrong, but I don't really think so, lets see what @Seanbirds has to say.
