Help ID this raptor

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the poor photo. Found this raptor on a telephone pole 30-40 miles south of Billings Montana while vacationing out west

last week.

I think (well I hope) it is a Golden Eagle. I've always wanted to see one.

Thanks very much,

Robert

The feathered legs are very evident in this fantastic image.

There are only two other raptors in the ABA Area with fully feathered tarsi, Ferruginous and Rough-legged (hence the name) hawks. The gape on your bird is too long for Rough-legged and, though shaded, the darkness of the tail could rule out Ferrug.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The shot of this raptor I posted was a phone shot of the bird on my computer and that shot from my camera, so again apologizing for the image quality.

I did get to shoot the Eagle flying and will post that one here if any have an interest. I just need to find the file and process it. Memory says it was better than

the shot on the telephone pole.
