Seen late this afternoon at DeSoto NWR, near Missouri Valley, Iowa.  Possibly the same bird I posted a few minutes ago.  It flew from a higher perch onto this felled tree trunk, then stayed there motionless for nearly a minute.  Any idea what this behavior is??

Appears to be typical sunning behavior but why it's doing it in this case I have no idea.

I see cardinals, jays, and doves doing this in my backyard, although they do it on the ground.  Mostly they're sunning themselves, although some birds do it to let ants pick parasites off them.

Were there any ants on that log?  Birds sometimes disturb ants, something about formic acid and mites, I think.

If it remained perfectly motionless I imagine some raptor flew over. Sunning birds at least will move their heads.
